Classical Education

The Seven Liberal Arts of Classical Education

The Verbal Arts (Trivium)
1. Grammar
2. Logic
3. Rhetoric
The Math Arts (Quadrivium)
4. Arithmetic
5. Music
6. Geometry
7. Astronomy

This overview is designed to help briefly explain the framework and philosophy of Classical Education, the curriculum priority for Twin Peaks Charter High School. TPCHS is focused on applying the grammar, logic, and rhetoric stages of the Trivium to all subject areas.

The three levels (or developmental stages) of the Trivium are a little misleading. Grammar is not limited to “English Grammar,” but it is better associated with basic facts and knowledge of any subject matter. All subject areas have basic information that must be grasped before an individual would be able to move on to the next level of competency.

The next level is Logic, or understanding. Once basic facts (or content) are mastered, one must understand how facts relate to one another and affect the whole of the subject. This is the stage where all the questions are asked: who, what, when, how, why, where, to what degree and so on.

Finally, after Grammar and Logic, the student is prepared for Rhetoric: original thought. Students at this level have mastered the basic facts, understand the relationships and are ready to take the subject matter to the next level: forming their own personal interpretation or developing new applications. This is where problem solving and creative thinking emerge. In addition to developing these original thoughts, students are expected to be able to express them in a polished, well-conceived written or verbal format.

The Trivium roughly coincides to: Grammar grades K-6, Logic grades 7-9 and Rhetoric grades 10-12, although portions of each can be found integrated at all levels. The Quadrivium, or the study of the “Math Arts” is the study of individual subjects. This portion of study, while it may begin in the high school years, was traditionally relegated to the university level.

In 1947, a British mystery writer names Dorothy Sayers wrote a short essay, “The Lost Tools of Learning”, in which her major premise was that students/adults no longer knew how to learn. She believed schools were teaching a disjointed, unconnected flow of facts, not giving the students a logical system by which to organize material and absorb it. We recommend reading this essay.

Admissions

Twin Peaks Charter Academy is a public school of choice within the St. Vrain Valley School District (SVVSD) offering the Core Knowledge sequence for K-8th and a new college preparatory high school with Classical Education priorities. We are a state-funded school, founded, built and governed by our dedicated parents.

The High School opened for grade 9 in August, 2011 and will add another grade level each year, 9th – 12th until we reach a full four year program.  For the 2013-2014 school year, we are accepting enrollment applications for grades K-11.

Since we are a school of choice, serving the entire SVVSD, enrollment openings are filled from lists created each year through a public lottery held in January, and followed by waiting lists for each grade.  Please remember that participating in the lottery or providing an enrollment application is not a guarantee of enrollment.

Enrollment preference is given to current students and siblings, then to new students who live in the St. Vrain Valley district and then to out-of-district applicants.  Parents of currently enrolled students are required to annually re-enroll students for the upcoming school year and apply for new siblings, who have priority over the new enrollment applicants.   This is completed in mid-December through  mid-January of each school year for the coming year, before the Lottery sort is held. Remaining openings in all grades are filled with the enrollment application lists according to policy. See also Admission FAQ's linked below, "Admission Process" and “Admission Policies”.

To contact the school registrar for an update on the enrollment waiting list or with any other questions about enrollment, please send e-mail to: putrah_marilyn@svvsd.org or call 303.772.7286 X 57051.

Core Knowledge

The academic foundation of Twin Peaks Charter Academy is the Core Knowledge sequence, a successful and widely recognized educational reform based on the premise that a grade-by-grade core of common learning is necessary to ensure a sound and fair elementary education. This core is the foundation upon which successive work in later grades is based.

Core Knowledge continuum is a proven program stressing sequential knowledge at each grade level building a broad base of knowledge in a wide range of academic and artistic disciplines. Our expectation is that, given the opportunity, children can happily and successfully perform at much higher levels than is routinely expected in most other school environments.

One size does not fit all.

We understand that each child has individual needs so we've supplemented the Core Knowledge curriculum with an array of opportunities for individualized instruction. For those with special needs there are programs such as Accelerated Reader while our literacy strategies individually tackle reading problems with work on phonemic awareness. Also, there is a dedicated Gifted & Talented program for exceptionally bright students who meet testing criteria and routinely perform above grade level in a number of academic subject areas. Our eighth grade students have the opportunity travel to Washington D.C. for a week-long course offered by World Strides. This is a TPCA tradition supported by student fund-raising and parent and teacher support. With a start in 2009/10, the middle school has embarked on a sports program that rivals other area middle schools in cross country, basketball, wrestling and volleyball. The school continues will to develop programs such as upcoming courses for 2010 summer vacation.

Want to know more about Core Knowledge?

Begun by Professor E. D. Hirsch, Jr., author of Cultural Literacy and The Schools We Need, Core Knowledge is based on a large body of research in cognitive psychology, as well as a careful examination of several of the world's fairest and most effective school systems. Professor Hirsch has argued that, for the sake of academic excellence, greater fairness, and higher literacy, early schooling should provide a solid, specific, shared core curriculum in order to help children establish strong foundations of knowledge. After wide consultation, the content of this core curriculum has been outlined in two books — the Core Knowledge Preschool Sequence and the Core Knowledge Sequence, K–8 — that state explicitly what students should learn at each grade level. Currently, hundreds of schools and thousands of dedicated educators are participating in this school reform movement throughout the United States.

About Us

Twin Peaks Charter Academy is a highly successful, parent-run public charter school that was established in the fall of 1997 by a group of dedicated parents.  These parents desired a richer, more rigorous educational opportunity for children than was available in traditional district schools.  They achieved exactly that at this school.

TPCA is a multi-year winner of the prestigious John Irwin award for excellence.  Our elementary and middle schools regularly achieve top scores in state CSAP tests and various other measures.

The longest continuously operating charter school in the St. Vrain Valley School District, TPCA's curriculum is founded on the principles of the nationally renowned Core Knowledge sequence, placing strong emphasis on student academics and achievement, character development and parent involvment.

The fully funded and financially healthy school of over 900 students is run by engaged and passionate parents who serve on an elected board of directors and various committees that govern everything from the dress code, to curriculum, to technology implementation.

Furthermore, staff and administrators are motivated and highly trained to help students succeed in an achievement-oriented academic environment. We strive to give the opportunity to learn and excel to as many children as possible. Enrollment at TPCA is open to all who participate in a state-mandated annual lottery, ensuring that the admissions process is fair, open and transparent.

Success Breeds Success

In order to accommodate growing and accelerating demand for our proven program, TPCA moved to a purpose-built campus in central Longmont in the summer of 2009. The 80,000 square-foot facility contains a wealth of amenities including ample room for grades K-12, exceptionally well-equipped art and music rooms, state-of-the-art science and computer labs, and abundant library/media resources. The large commons area, cafetorium, and two gymnasiums perfectly complement the academic facilities and enhance the entire education experience.
