Rigorous Academics

Welcome To Twin Peaks Charter Academy

Core Knowledge

Our elementary and middle schools use the Core Knowledge Sequence to build a solid educational foundation for our children. The Sequence is a coherent, cumulative, and content-specific plan based on the idea of E.D. Hirsch, Jr., educational reformer and professor emeritus of education and humanities at the University of Virginia. Hirsch’s educational approach, founded in 1986, is based on the idea that content matters. In his research, Hirsch found that students who were well-versed in broad subjects like history, geography, civics, the arts, and basic science were better prepared to read college level texts compared to students who lacked this basic background knowledge.

Although current events and technology are constantly changing, Hirsch argues that there exists a common body of lasting knowledge and skills that form the educational basis for all students.

Classical Education

Twin Peaks Charter Academy High School is a classical education high school that seeks to enhance our students’ academic achievements through the addition of college recognized coursework.

Classical education is a language-rich and comprehensive curriculum based on the maturing aspect of a student’s mind. Learning is based on language: words, written and spoken, are emphasized, rather than images in pictures, videos and television. Language-based learning requires the mind to work harder. Further, learning follows a specific three-part pattern: the mind must be supplied with facts; then given the logical tools for organization of facts; and finally equipped to express conclusions. The goal of classical education is to foster logic, inquiry, and effective communication.

We have embraced classical education due to four essential characteristics that separate it from other forms of education. Our students will learn to:

Express their logical conclusions in clear, forceful, and elegant language

Synthesize the processes of higher learning, including thinking, reading, writing, and speaking

Value all knowledge and its context, leading to wisdom

Cultivate character through rigorous study, leading to virtue
